About

Hi, I'm Axel. I like owning the whole problem.

I am a product engineer, which in practice means I do the talking-to-users part, the deciding-what-to-build part, the building part and the running-it-in-production part, and I get itchy when I am only allowed one of them.

I have been building web applications since 2016, all of it in early-stage companies. Five years at Twice Commerce as the engineer who also owned the data platform and the growth experiments, and since 2024 the product engineer for the oncology vertical at Gosta Labs, working directly with clinicians. I have been the only engineer, the data person, the frontend person and the "why is the deploy broken" person, sometimes in the same afternoon. That range is the point: it lets me carry a product from schema to interface without waiting on a handoff. Business first, data second, code in service of both.

Before software I played floorball in Finland's top league, with a season in Sweden along the way, and it shows. I like teams, I like a plan, and I like being told the score. The hockey-analytics side projects are where the two halves overlap: I would rather measure the game than argue about it.

Work history

Where I have been.

  1. Oct 2024 – now

    Product Engineer · Gosta Labs

Healthcare AI startup in Helsinki building an AI operating system for oncology teams. I own engineering delivery and product priorities for the oncology vertical: requirements gathered with clinical users, then design, testing, implementation and onboarding. React and TypeScript in front, Node and Python with FastAPI behind. The habit of building alongside the people who use the software is the job.

  2. Jun 2019 – Sep 2024

Software Engineer & Analytics Lead · Twice Commerce, formerly Rentle

Circular-commerce platform for rental businesses. Designed, built and maintained the data platform: custom ETL pipelines and a dbt and BigQuery semantic layer that gave the company self-service analysis in Looker and PostHog. Shipped recommendation systems, image recognition and LLM features in TypeScript and React for the beta launch of twice.market. Ran roughly a hundred growth experiments, A/B tests and a freemium trial among them, and nearly doubled the conversion rate from website usage to paying customer between 2022 and January 2024.

  3. 2016 – now

    Freelance consultant · Cedercreutz Consulting

Web applications and analytics solutions for client organisations. Among them: contributed to Supabase's migration to server-side PostHog tracking, implementing the integrations and the proofs of concept the team extended across further repositories, and built custom connectors for scheduled database syncs.

  4. Jan 2017 – Dec 2019

    Co-founder & advisor · Dash

Co-founded a student-led design hackathon and advised the organisers who ran it after me.

Education and the rest

Where it comes from.

  1. 2021 – 2022

MSc, Computer Science · Aalto University, with honours

User, Data and Design. Thesis on demand forecasting for access-based consumption: a machine-learning approach to forecasts and inventory recommendations, with an interactive application for stakeholders to explore forecasts and service-level trade-offs. Written while working at Twice Commerce, on Twice Commerce's problem.

  2. 2016 – 2020

BSc, Computer Science · Aalto University

Information Networks: a programme that mixes software, data and business, which turned out to be a fair description of the job.

  3. Summer 2016

Web Development Bootcamp · BrainStation, Toronto

A summer of full-time web development. This is where the coding started, and it never really stopped.

  4. 2016 – 2018

    Floorball · F-liiga, Finland's top league

Two seasons at the top level with Steelers in Hämeenlinna, after a season in Sweden as a junior. Twice-a-day training through high school taught me most of what I know about showing up.
